Carbon Reduction Plan

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Sterimax Global Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 1st January to 31st December 2021 (Calendar Year)
Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Sterimax Global have just started collecting emissions data in accordance with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirement for our financial year ending 31st December 2021, and therefore have no previous reporting.

In accordance with these requirements, we have Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for our first reporting year and this will be used as our baseline for the years to come.

Scope 1 has been reported and the data has come from our management accounting software. Scope 2 has been reported as zero this is because our energy usage was supplied from 100% renewable sources. Scope 3 data has been collected from calculating emissions on Sterimax owned vehicles; as well as air, sea and rail freight.

We aim to improve the accuracy of our Scope 3 by receiving more emissions data from third party logistic companies we currently use, and by using our own vehicle fleet more so we can base calculations more on actual data rather than average data methods.

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 135 tCO2e by 2027. This is a reduction of 30%

Although our baseline emission data is as accurate as currently possible for the year ending 31 December 2021, we plan to install new mechanisms to capture additional data and assist in the accuracy of our reporting.

As part of the review of our carbon emissions we will also be considering our target date for achieving NetZero from 2040 and exploring possibilities to bring this forward. To ensure that we are progressing to plan, interim milestones/targets will be established.

Carbon Reduction Projects

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2021 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes will be measured in the years to follow as this is the baseline year of our carbon reduction plan.

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives:

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the start of our baseline year, including:

      • Appointing a Head of Environmental Sustainability and Carbon Reduction policy to lead this area.

        • Launched an Environmental Policy which outlines our commitment to minimising the negative environmental impact of our activities. We also share our commitments through our wider Corporate Social Responsibility statement on our website.

        • We are aiming to be ISO 14001 accredited by July/August 2023

        • Initiated the internal Net Zero project. This has included getting data to inform our baseline Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions.

        • Launched a hybrid approach to working for 50% of our staff, which assists homeworking and brings a reduction in the amount of carbon generated through employee commuting.

        • Encouraged and support electric powered and hybrid vehicles, as currently only 15% of the cars used by employees are of this type.

        • Actively purchase and provide sustainable products including biodegradable wipes and biodegradable nitrile gloves. We are actively advertising these products to encourage our clients to also help the environment.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

      Planned Carbon Reduction Initiatives:

Over the next 12 months we plan to build on our existing knowledge and understanding by implementing the following projects:

          • Identify gaps in scope 1, 2 and 3 reportable carbon emissions. Establish a methodology for capturing any missing data sources.

          • Develop a route map for achieve net zero to include:

          • Achievable reduction milestones

          • Measure and report progress

          • Identify cost-effective emission reduction opportunities and required changes in operations to deliver these targets

          • Identify and manage climate-related risks to the business

          • Look into other carbon removal schemes (such as a cycle to work scheme or tree planting)

          • Increase the amount of electric powered, hybrid vehicles within the Sterimax company.

          • Look at better ways of reducing travel emissions and consolidating shipments to avoid unnecessary transportation emissions and reduce miles travelled.

More broadly, we will be looking to align with the principles of the ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems standard and will review operations against the standard to identify any compliance gaps. We will continue to work with the procurement department to understand how better to integrate and embed environmental sustainability in procurement processes and contract terms and conditions; and encourage our suppliers to meet NetZero by 2050.
